WASHINGTON – The increasing U.S. trade deficit with China has cost America
millions of jobs between 2001 and 2007, according to a study being released
July 30 by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI). These displaced workers lost
an average of $8,146 last year in wages (at a total of $19.4 billion) as they
moved to lower-paying jobs.
The report, being issued nine days before the start of the 2008 Beijing Summer
Olympics, offers new insights into an already troubled economy and provides
detailed analysis of job loss by state and industry.
