UFT Players To Produce Reading Of Wholly Mother Jones

UFT PLAYERS TO PRODUCE WHOLLY MOTHER JONES
JUNE 3 AND 4, 2010
The UFT Players, a professional committee of the United Federation of Teachers in New York City, will produce a staged reading of Wholly Mother Jones, a play with music, by Peter Agnos, on Thursday June 3, 2010, and Friday, June 4, 2010, at 50 Broadway, New York City. Both performances will start at 6 p.m.
Mary Harris Jones, known as Mother Jones, was also known (and feared) by many corporate bosses as the "most dangerous woman in America." She was born in Ireland in 1830 and died in America in 1930. She agitated for workers rights, led many strikes all around the country in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and spoke out for human rights for all. For her tireless efforts to improve working conditions for men, women, and children, she was arrested and jailed for a time when she was 83. As she said, "Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living."
The show is directed by Suzanne Lamberg and Elizabeth Rosen. The music director is Barbara Haspel. Milton Polsky and Warren Wyss are the producers. Mother Jones will be portrayed by Gail Sherwood. All of these participants are members of the UFT (United Federation of Teachers), as are the cast and chorus. The company will include some guest musicians to accompany the rousing singing of such well-known union songs as "Which Side Are You On?"
The UFT Players, now in their thirteenth year, produce a variety of shows the year round, including original plays, signature productions of well-known playwrights, musicals, poetry readings, and other kinds of theatrical fare. The co-chairs are Milton Polsky and Warren Wyss. The group has just concluded presenting with great success, a revue entitled "Funny Bone," directed by Suzanne Lamberg and Elizabeth Rosen.
"As a labor union of teachers we are looking forward to presenting a play about Mother Jones, who for so many years, was a fearless and inspiring spokesperson for labor and human rights," said Warren Wyss, the lead producer.
