We are finally getting our “day in court” to get our union office back at our bus garage. Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) management illegally took our office away shortly after I was elected to be 600 transit workers shop steward and executive board member in March of 2015. In September of 2015 we filed charges with the Illinois Labor Relations Board...and the appointed CTA managers and lawyers have stalled and stalled for 18 months... We also filed charges against CTA for illegally prohibiting union meetings discussing solidarity with the Chicago Teachers Union. We also alleged that CTA illegally tore down union fliers building solidarity between different sections of the working class. A victory here is a victory for all working peoples’ rights to freedom of speech and organization in the workplace.
We are asking our allies to help us in the following ways:
1. Pack the courtroom and show how much community support CTA workers have.
2. Speak out in support of workers rights at our press conference just before the hearing. Please join us at 8 am on Monday, April 10 at Illinois Labor Board offices (160 N. LaSalle St.).
3. Help us cover the legal costs of fighting back against unfair labor practices by the Chicago Transit Authority.
Please donate money (by clicking on the fundraising link here: https://fundrazr.com/fightback?fb_ref=share__f6ZhJ6) to help pay for the court stenographer. A new undemocratic law requires workers to pay possibly thousands of dollars to hold bosses accountable. We plan to give the rest of the money to cover costs, such as the generous assistance of our volunteer lawyers and to prepare for further actions. This is just part of a long fight.
We need to raise $500 by the day of the hearing (Monday, 10th of April) to cover the cost of the court reporter, and we hope to raise a total of $5,000 by April 30 to cover the rest.
4. Help us spread the word so that we can build solidarity and awareness of the struggles of Chicago's transit workers throughout our city and beyond. Share this message with your friends and others in struggle.
