BACKGROUND:
The "Freightliner Five" or "Cleveland Five" are members of UAW 3250 in Cleveland, North Carolina representing workers at a Freightliner factory. The five were members of their Local's bargaining committee and after hitting a wall with the company, took the workers out on strike. Members of the five lost their jobs and their positions in the union and were put on trial by the UAW. While cleared of charges, the five are asking the union to help get their jobs back.

In their own words what they hope to achieve:
"We hope that by telling our story pressure will be placed on Freightliner, LLC and will also encourage the UAW International to pay us strike pay and healthcare benefits for being discharged for union activity. This struggle is not just about us, but the future of organizing in the South. If a company can victimize rank and file union leadership of a unionized plant this will hinder and threaten all other organizing efforts in the South. Workers who want to become unionized will look at this and decide it is too dangerous."

The Freightliner Five's campaign has been endorsed by Ken Riley, president of ILA 1422 in Charleston, South Carolina and Donna Dewitt, President of the South Carolina AFL-CIO. These trade unionists were leaders of the fight to Free The "Charleston Five" case of longshore workers.
