Dear Friends and colleagues:

IT'S MY PLEASURE TO share with you a couple of news items: First, last
week Governor Schwarzenegger signed the California state budget, which
included $6 million for statewide labor programs at the University of
California. This will reinstate labor research and education programs
throughout California at the level that we were at in 2000. Thanks to
all of our supporters who helped to make this happen!

Second, my term as chair of the Labor Center ended on June 30, and I am
pleased to announce that deputy chair Ken Jacobs has stepped into the
position as chair. Ken has assisted me in all aspects of managing the
Labor Center, and has guided research projects on low wage work and
health care that have become vital to current debate and activity in
these fields. I am confident that Ken will be great as chair, and hope
that you will join me in wishing him all the best.

Thanks again to all of you for your support!
