Twas the Night Before Christmas: A Poem For Woodfin Workers
By Sarah Norr

Sarah Norr is the lead organizer at the Woodfin Hotel for the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (EBASE). There will be a rally at Woodfin Hotel in Emeryville, California on December 18th, 2006

'Twas the month before Christmas
And all through the Bay
Folks were shopping and planning
For their special day

But out at the Woodfin
Things weren't quite so swell -
For the hardworking cleaners
Were catching some hell.

They'd marched and they'd rallied
They'd put up a fight
They'd faced down Sam Hardage
Defending their rights.

But now they were troubled,
Living in fear
That their Grinchlike employer
Would spoil the good cheer.

For five years or more
They'd been scrubbing his suites
But Hardage had spoken:
"Throw them out on the streets!"

But the workers had courage.
They swore not to quit
So come show Sam Hardage
We won't stand for this sh**.

Bring Christmas carols
Bring stockings of coal
Bring cookies and bells
And signs en espaņol.

Give the workers a real gift:
Let them know we'll be here
We'll be standing beside them
Right through the New Year.
