Call To Artists: Triangle Fire Commemoration

REMEMBER THE TRIANGLE. IMPROVE WORKERS LIVES TODAY.

The Northern California Organizing Committee and LaborFest join in sponsoring
the 100th Year Commemoration of the Triangle Fire. Visual artists are asked to
contribute work in any medium addressing the legacy of the Triangle Shirtwaist
Factory fire, New York City, of March 25, 1911, and the unfinished business of
addressing workplace health and safety for all in today’s volatile, changing
world.

Gap, Abercrombie, JC Penney, Phillips-Van Heusen and other garment manufacturers
perpetuate the hazardous conditions that Triangle owners Max Blanck and Isaac
Harris profited from in the early twentieth century. It is in Bangladesh where
these contemporary manufacturers profit while fires and collapsing buildings
continue to kill hundreds of garment workers. In America, workplace health and
safety continues to affect workers’ lives — meatpacking plants, agricultural
fields, and biological laboratories, to name a few, are dangerous places to
work.

Art from San Francisco Bay Area artists will be installed for one day at the
International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 34 hall on March 26th,
and will complement other live events (may be extended for two weeks). Artists
must be able to deliver and pick up work. A virtual exhibition of these local
artworks and additional artworks from outside the Bay Area will be hosted by
LaborFest at their website.

Submission material should be sent to David Duckworth at duckdiva@yahoo.com, or
by regular post to: David Duckworth, 1600 California Street #21, San Francisco,
CA 94109 (with SASE if requiring return). Please send curriculum vitae, .jpg or
.pdf digital image files (up to five) with an accompanying image list detailing:
title of work, date of execution, medium, and dimensions. Inclusion of art in
the hall and at the website will be determined by committee. Submissions must
be received by February 21st. Participants will be notified by February 21st;
all artists will receive a response.
