Dear friends and immigrant rights allies,

I'm writing to inform you of a campaign that SEIU members are waging in order to get the SEIU International to retract its support of legislation that includes a guest worker program, employer sanctions, and the further militarization of the border. As you may know, SEIU International took the position to support the McCain-Kennedy bill which included these components. Locals like 790 have already passed resolutions condemning this and supporting legalization without punitive measures. It is extremely important that we get SEIU International to change its position on this, because this bill and others will again be debated in Congress next year. The AFL/CIO already supports us.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! SEIU International is sending its Washington policy person to San Francisco on November 21 to talk to people here about why the International should change its position. We think that having immigrant organizations present to explain our position would be very powerful. The meeting will take place on November 21, 4-9 pm, at Local 790, 350 Rhode Island St., SF.

Please let me know if you can make this meeting!

In Solidarity,
Renee Saucedo

Sign The Petition at NoWorkerIsIllegal.Org! No Guest-Worker Programs!

Dear SEIU Sisters and Brothers:

SEIU's current immigration position includes support for recent compromise congressional legislation that contains guest-worker programs, further militarization of the US-Mexico border, and employer sanctions.

We, a group of SEIU members active both in our San Francisco Bay Area Locals and the grassroots immigrant rights movement, are astonished at the position and determined to see SEIU drop its support for such legislation. Guest-worker programs, further militarization of the border, and employer sactions hurt all workers, and we would like to ask you to join us in developing an immigration position for SEIU that builds a stronger labor movement.

Here are several things you can do immediately:

  1. Sign the petition at www.noworkerisillegal.org/petition calling on SEIU to drop its support of immigration legislation that hurts all workers, and forward www.noworkerisillegal.org/emailpetition it to all your fellow SEIU members and staff.

  2. Work with your Local's Executive Board and caucases to pass an immigrant rights resolution ( here is a sample www.noworkerisillegal.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=30). If your Local has already passed a resolution, please forward it to us!
  3. Ask your Local's Interational Executive Board Delegates to co-sponsor and vote in support of our resolution calling on SEIU to drop its support.

  4. Start a SEIU immigrant rights committee in your city to join us in building broad-based support for a pro-worker immigration agenda!
Thank you for your support and immediate action.
